About the Team
What is a Skillet made of?
The CAST Iron Skillets are made up of disabled athletes from the Central Alabama area. To be eligible for competition in the NWBA, you must have a permanent disability of the lower limbs. Our players may have spinal cord injuries, Cerebal Palsy, Spina Bifida, lower limb amputations, and other conditions that qualify them for the sport.
Some of our current players were a part of the first Auburn University wheelchair basketball team that first began in 2010. The AU team began as a DIII team and has now turned in to one of the best collegiate wheelchair basketball teams in the USA. After Auburn University was able to fill its roster with all college students, some of the former players started up a new Auburn DIII team in 2017. This team was sponsored by CAST Ministries (also known as the Christian Amputee Support Team which also goes by the Christian Adaptive Support Team). This team was blessed to win the 2019 DIII National Championship. In 2020, we competed as the first DII team in Auburn Wheelchair Basketball History. At the request of Auburn University, we changed our team name to help distinguish between the two organizations. So in 2021, we returned to the DIII division as the CAST Iron Skillets.
